So it begins! The 1.6L Miata engine has been transported and the head is off! After much anticipation, I finally got the 1.6L motor from our crew chief Matt's house. This motor has an unknown history, and is a perfect candidate for a rebuild. After attending Mike's Miata Place's engine build and Saguaro Miata Club meet, I feel I am ready to undertake the task. I've got a bit of experience with building an engine, when I assisted Mr. Bush of RhinoForums.net with a complete rebuild of a 2.4L KA24DE. During this build I plan to really take my time and learn everything I can along the way. I'm excited about collecting some new tools, and gaining as much knowledge as possible. I will be on the forums, on the phone with Mike, and of course buying lunches for our crew chief Matt. I'm excited, and I will be sure to post pics and status along the way.

STATUS: Initially, I noticed about a quart of antifreeze in the in the oil when I drained it. I removed the head, and the #4 cylinder spark plug was gummed up with a mixture of oil and water. It seems evident that there was a problem with the head gasket at the #4 spot. There is plenty of burnt carbon and other debris in each of the cylinders, but the head and valves seem to be in good shape. In the next few days I hope to get the motor turned upside down, and we'll start taking apart the bottom end. More pictures to come! (Hopefully with a better camera!)
